Cornell Off-Campus Living: A Guide to Splitting Utilities with Roommates 💡

As college students venturing into off-campus living, navigating shared spaces presents exciting opportunities and practical challenges. While splitting an apartment offers cost benefits and fosters social connections, figuring out how to fairly divide utilities can quickly become a source of stress. This guide will equip you, the Cornell University student, with the knowledge and tools to navigate the intricacies of shared utilities with your roommates, ensuring a smooth and financially harmonious living experience.

Communication is Key

Before diving into specifics, establish open communication with your roommates.

Setting Up Utilities

Before your lease start date, you'll need to coordinate with your roommates to set up essential utilities:

  • Heat/Electricity (NYSEG):

    • Decide who will call NYSEG (1-800-572-1111, Press 3) to transfer the account into your name. This person will be responsible for collecting payments from everyone.

    • Call at least 2-3 weeks before your lease start date (August 7, 2024) and provide the unit address.

    • You can also set up and pay for your bill online at NYSEG.COM.

    • Meters are located outside the house along the driveway.

    • Important: You will be charged for any heat/electricity costs if this is not set up correctly by your lease start date.

  • Internet (Spectrum):

    • One tenant will register the account in their name and be responsible for collecting payments.

    • We advise the first tenants to move in (or whoever registers) to call Spectrum (866) 874-2389 at least 2-3 weeks beforehand to schedule a technician installation on move-in day.

    • Visit the Spectrum store at 519 W State St, Ithaca, NY 14850 for in-person assistance.

    • Remember to terminate service and return the modem box in person when you move out to avoid continued charges.

Splitting the Bill Fairly

  • Equal Split: This is the simplest option, dividing the total bill equally among all roommates.

Money Management Apps

Several money management apps can simplify splitting bills and tracking shared expenses. Venmo, Splitwise, and BillSplitter are popular options that allow easy digital payments and record-keeping.
